Northstar has been producing Shine On for Marie Curie Cancer Care for almost two years now, but this issue marked a new direction for the charity’s vital fundraising magazine. After publishing five issues, Northstar proposed a format change from the larger ‘newspaper’ style we’d inherited in 2008 to a smaller, more contemporary magazine.

Our reasoning was simple: the new format means more pages, more bite-size stories, and therefore more opportunities to engage the readers and drive involvement – as well as those all-important charitable donations. The results were immediate: the new magazine’s effectiveness was measurably greater than previous editions as soon as it was mailed out, and at the time of writing the issue was more than 30 per cent ahead of its money-raising target.
